What are vitality and change readiness?
Vitality is derived from the Latin “vita,” meaning life. By “vitality,” then, we mean the mental and physical energy a person has to live. Or more simply put, what motivates someone to get out of bed every day with energy? Vital employees make for a healthier organization. Factors such as workload can cause employees to become less vital.
“Readiness to change” concerns people’s willingness to adapt to new processes, new practices, or new systems. The organization can influence employees’ willingness to change, for example, by involving employees in change and increasing support.
Vitality, absenteeism, and turnover
A (too) high workload puts pressure on employees’ vitality. This typically manifests itself in higher absenteeism and, ultimately, in higher employee turnover. This problem often arises precisely in environments where there is already a shortage of staff, which can cause a downward spiral that must be stopped, or better, prevented.
Can you change under high work pressure?
At the same time, organizations need to change more and more. This combination of challenges plays out, for example, in the health care sector. The demand for care is growing, while the budget and number of caregivers is not. This leads to the need to spend less time per client/patient so that staff can provide care to more people. For health care providers, delivering good care is key. This seems at odds with this strategic change that means less time per client. Therefore, the necessary change is met with resistance among employees. Working to increase change readiness is therefore important for successful change.
