For example, authoritarian leadership styles, a lack of trust between team members, and the inability to empathize with each other can contribute to an unsafe environment. We list some of the reasons for it to be possibly dangerous:<\/p><ol><li><strong>Impediment to productivity and innovation:<\/strong> If employees do not feel safe to share ideas or voice their concerns, it can lead to reservations and self-censorship. <\/li><li><strong>High levels of stress and anxiety:<\/strong> Employees may be afraid of making mistakes or experiencing negative consequences when expressing their opinions, resulting in stress and anxiety.<\/li><li><strong>Decreased trust and cooperation:<\/strong> In an unsafe environment, team members will trust each other less and be less likely to cooperate effectively. <\/li><li><strong>Higher staff turnover:<\/strong> Employees who do not feel safe in their workplace are more likely to leave the organization in search of a safer environment. <\/li><li><strong>Poor reputation and talent attraction:<\/strong> If it becomes known that an organization lacks psychological safety, it can cause a negative reputation, making it more difficult to attract new talent.<\/li><\/ol><h5><strong>Research on psychological safety in the workplace<\/strong><\/h5><div>Among the effects measured in scientific research are the following:<\/div><ul><li><strong>Stronger innovativeness<\/strong>: 30-100% more improvement ideas, 20-40% more actual implementations<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/255576931_Leadership_Behavior_and_Employee_Voice_Is_The_Door_Really_Open\">(Detert &amp; Burris, 2007<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.2307\/2666999\">Edmondson, 1999<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227786247_Innovation_is_Not_Enough_Climates_for_Initiative_and_Psychological_Safety_Process_Innovations_and_Firm_Performance\">Baer &amp; Frese, 2003<\/a>).<\/li><li><strong>Greater learning ability<\/strong>: 30-40% more error messages, 20-35% fewer critical errors and repeat errors<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227375460_Speaking_Up_in_the_Operating_Room_How_Team_Leaders_Promote_Learning_in_Interdisciplinary_Action_Teams\">(Edmondson, 2003<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227521893_Making_It_Safe_The_Effects_of_Leader_Inclusiveness_and_Professional_Status_on_Psychological_Safety_and_Improvement_Efforts_in_Health_Care_Teams\">Nembhard &amp; Edmondson, 2006<\/a>).<\/li><li><strong>Faster product development<\/strong>: 10-20% shorter lead times<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227375460_Speaking_Up_in_the_Operating_Room_How_Team_Leaders_Promote_Learning_in_Interdisciplinary_Action_Teams\">(Edmondson, 2003<\/a>).<\/li><li><strong>Better team performance<\/strong>: 10-15% higher output<a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2016-49977-001\">(Frazier et al., 2017<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/psychsafety.com\/googles-project-aristotle\/\">Google Project Aristotle, 2012-2015<\/a>).<\/li><li><strong>Greater problem-solving ability<\/strong>: 20-25% more useful solutions in complex situations<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227786247_Innovation_is_Not_Enough_Climates_for_Initiative_and_Psychological_Safety_Process_Innovations_and_Firm_Performance\">(Baer &amp; Frese, 2003<\/a>).<\/li><\/ul><p>In short, a lack of psychological safety at work can have a negative impact on an organization&#8217;s performance, well-being, and culture. It is therefore vital for leaders and managers to invest in creating a safe and supportive environment for all employees.<\/p><h6 class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Getting started with psychological safety in the workplace<\/strong><\/h6><p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Discussing psychological safety at work begins with open communication and creating a culture in which respect and trust are central. Leaders can lead by example by showing vulnerability, valuing feedback, and fostering a culture of collaboration. It is also important to actively listen to team members&#8217; input and ideas and encourage constructive discussions.<\/p><p>To examine psychological safety <a href=\"https:\/\/thebettercompany.io\/en\/evidence-based-practice\/\">evidence-based<\/a> within an organization, it is important to use validated measurement scales. In the Psychological Safety Scan, The Better Company measures &#8220;employee voice&#8221; in conjunction with <a href=\"https:\/\/amycedmondson.com\/psychological-safety\/\">Amy Edmondson<\/a>&#8216;s scale for &#8220;psychological safety,&#8221; developed at Harvard. We relate the outcome (or degree of social safety) to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thebettercompany.io\/en\/do-better-scans\/psychological-safety-scan\/\">9 scientifically based drivers of social safety<\/a>. In the analysis of the measurement, we can determine which 2 to 4 of these 9 factors have a pervasive impact on the specific organization.
